Welding Research Institute – Industrial Institute SR (VÚZ - PI SR) is scientific, research, development and production workplace in the field of welding and allied technologies. Activities of VÚZ - PI SR are focused on basic and applied research, certification, education, material testing, quality assurance and also the production of specific products such as special welding consumables and also weldments. VÚZ - PI SR solves the problems of material engineering, welding, surfacing, brazing/soldering, spraying and thermal cutting for mechanical engineering and electrical industries, construction, power engineering, transport, agriculture, etc. VUZ-PI SR is: Authorized National Body (ANB) authorized by EWF and IIW for implementation of international education system in welding in Slovakia and for authorisation of qualified personnel in welding; Authorised National Body for Certification of Companies (ANBCC) in welding; Authorised Training Body (ATB) for welding personnel.

EWF is an international non-profit association whose principal aims are:
- To collaborate in the study and solution of welding-related problems encountered within its fields of competence;
- To encourage projects for cooperative research and contribute to the removal of technical barriers
- To provide the exchange for scientific and technical information
- To prepare harmonised rules for the education and training of personnel involved in welding, joining and related technologies
- To act as the representative of the welding community in Europe.
EWF, in conjunction with the relevant national welding organisations of 29 European countries, has made great efforts in the up dating and harmonisation of training and education in the field of welding technology. It was a pioneer organisation in education and qualification, developing the first truly harmonised scheme embracing the European countries for the training of personnel at all levels, from crafts people to professional engineers.

Institut za varilstvo is an institution specialised in research and education in the field of welding and allied processes with more than 50 years of experience. It includes laboratories for mechanical testing, metallography, welding technology, pressure vessels and electrical engineering. It employs around 35 persons, of which 6are doctors of science. The Institute's dislocated unit and the Technology Centre are in charge of technology transfer to industry. Institut za varilstvo has participated in several Slovenian and international projects in the field of applied science and education. It is running courses in the field of welding and allied processes in accordance with European and international programs. With regard to the experience gained in the field of education of welding personnel, Institut za varilstvo could collaborate in the renewal of programs, preparation of textbook, and improvement of harmonized testing of knowledge.

Testing and qualification of welding personnel. Following the status of ANB (Authorised National Body) according to directives of EWF/EOTC (European Welding Federation/ European Organisation for Conformity Assessment) and IIW (International Welding Institute) and other international organisations and related consequent activities. Creating background for run of qualification and certification for welding personnel according to standards ČSN 05 0705, ČSN EN 287, ČSN EN ISO 9606, ČSN EN 1418, ČSN EN 13133, ČSN EN 719, ČSN EN 729, and related documentation of EWF, IIW, IAB (International Authorisations Board) and for personnel in the field of plastic according to prEN 13067, documentation of EWF and our own standards. Methodical harmonisation of education and testing of welding personnel including issuing of certificates compatible with the countries of European Union.
